Recently, one of our clients placed a large‑volume order for fire‑retardant banners tested and certified to EN 13501‑1 B‑s1,d0. During their supplier evaluation process, they sampled products from numerous manufacturers — yet none could satisfy this strict European fire‑safety requirement.

Why are more customers opting for high‑performance fire‑retardant banners today?

Fire‑safety rules for exhibitions, sports tournaments and major public events are becoming tighter across the globe. Specifications for event signage have been raised accordingly. High‑rated flame‑retardant banners are now a mandatory compliance check before large‑scale exhibitions and sporting events can go ahead.

I.What exactly is EN 13501‑1 B‑s1,d0?

In short, EN 13501‑1 B‑s1,d0 is a European fire classification. It confirms limited fire growth, very low smoke emission and zero flaming droplets — the most widely accepted compliance grade for hanging banners in European exhibition venues and sports arenas.
Let’s break this down:
1.EN 13501‑1 is the European standard governing fire‑reaction performance for construction products.
That said, a banner, flag, tent or any other event material cannot automatically qualify under EN 13501‑1 simply because it is marketed as fire‑retardant. Fire codes vary by country, product type and real‑world application.
For example, the United States follows NFPA 701 Class 1, while France uses NFP 92‑503 M1. The right certification must always match your project’s location and on‑site usage conditions.

2.B‑s1,d0 is the fire‑performance classification defined under EN 13501‑1.
‑ B stands for limited combustibility (fire‑retardant).
‑ s (smoke) 1 refers to the lowest‑smoke rating, representing minimal smoke emission.
‑ d (droplet) 0 means no flaming droplets are produced.
Put simply, the B‑s1,d0 rating describes three critical fire‑reaction properties of the material: fire‑retardant behaviour, very low smoke output, and an absence of burning molten droplets.
Importantly, fire‑retardant does not equal non‑combustible, nor does it indicate a long fire‑resistance duration. This classification only evaluates how a material behaves at the initial stage of a fire. The material will still burn when exposed to sustained, intense open flames.

II. Breakdown of Different Ratings Under EN 13501‑1

(1) Primary Fire‑Reaction Classes

Most A1 / A2 rated materials are inorganic substances. PVC banners fall under polymer‑based materials. The vast majority can only achieve B‑s1,d0. Class A2 is difficult to attain, while A1 is practically impossible.

(2) Smoke Production Classes

(3) Burning Droplet Classes

d2 Persistent burning droplets A large volume of flaming molten drips falls down, capable of igniting filter paper and triggering secondary fires. ❌ d2 grade is forbidden for indoor suspended banners.

Another frequently misunderstood point in international procurement: are B‑s1,d0 and B1 equivalent?

The answer is not necessarily. When B1 refers to Germany’s DIN 4102‑1 Class B1, it follows a separate classification system and is not the same as EN 13501‑1 B‑s1,d0. The two ratings therefore cannot be treated as identical.
